4 Tips for Tackling Your Apartment Search

Searching for a new apartment can be equal parts exciting and stressful. Maybe you’re moving for work, for family, for friends, or simply for a change of scenery. Whatever the reason may be, there are some key things you should keep in mind to help make your search as smooth as possible.

  1. Start Your Search Early – ‘Better late than never’ is not the way to go when it comes to searching for a new apartment. No one wants to make a decision in a pinch because they waited until the last minute! When moving locally, start your search three months before your desired move-in date. This should give you plenty of time to find your new apartment. Moving locally is a little easier than moving states because you already have a grasp of the area and its resources. When moving to a different state, start your search at least four months out. You’ll want ample time to research different neighborhoods and visit different apartment communities.
  2. Compare Prices with the Value of Amenities – It’s important to keep in mind that apartment communities come with a host of amenities and perks. Be sure to confirm with your leasing agent which amenities are included in the price they gave you, on occasion, they may not be included.
  3. Know How Much Space You Need – Finding the perfect “Goldilocks” sized space – not too little, not too big – can be daunting. Utilize the square-footing detail on the apartment communities’ floor plan to determine if the space is the right fit for your personal situation.
  4. Ask The Right Questions During A Tour – If you have a list of requirements for your new apartment that are not negotiable, you’ll want to be sure to bring them up during a tour or on a phone call with the leasing professional. For example, if you have a pet ask if the apartment community is pet-friendly and if there are breed or weight restrictions.

Apartment Living with a Pet

Furry friends are a joy to come home to after a long day. It’s no wonder that nearly 70% of people in the United States are pet owners¹. When it comes to moving with a pet, the first thing you need to check is if your desired apartment community is pet-friendly like Yorkshire Apartments, Montgomery Paint Branch Apartment Homes, and Vista at White Oak Apartments in Silver Spring. MD. Pet-friendly is a term used to describe apartment communities that allow cats and/or dogs within certain breed and weight guidelines. Talking to a leasing consultant is the best way to determine if your fur-baby is allowed.

Once you have the green light for your pet to join you in your new apartment, the fun begins! Apartment living with a pet comes with numerous perks. If you’re a dog owner, trips to local dog parks are a great way to socialize your pup and for you to meet new people. There are several notable dog parks near the White Oak Communities including Ellsworth Urban Dog Park, Takoma Park Dog Park, and Wheaton Dog Park. Another benefit of living with a pet is relaxation. Studies show that having a pet can help reduce stress. What sounds better than laying on the couch petting your furry friend when you’re upset? Pets can also help keep you on a schedule. They tend to want to be walked, cared for, and fed around the same time each day. Having a live-in alarm clock can help get you out the door on time.

There are so many fun pet products on the market that can help your furry friend feel at home in the new apartment, from cat climbing towers to cozy dog beds. Having a go-to napping spot or toy can help your pet cope with any separation anxiety they may have when you leave the apartment. You can shop for all your pet necessities and accessories at nearby pet stores like Unleashed by Petco, Bark!, and The Big Bad Woof.

It is important to note that even though you are living in a pet-friendly apartment community, not all your neighbors may be fond of animals. Remember to always respect your neighbors’ space when taking pets in and out of the building.

7 Tips For Making Moving Apartments Easy

Moving into a new apartment is a thrilling experience. You have a blank canvas to make your own, new neighbors to meet, and a local community to explore! However, the actual tasks of packing, moving, and unpacking can be daunting. If you’re able to move yourself into your new apartment, here are some tips to make the process a little easier:

1. Declutter First

Why pack and move what you don’t really need? Moving is the perfect time to part ways with clutter such as old clothes, mismatched dishware, or furniture that has seen better days. Go through your current belongings to determine what you’ll be keeping, donating, and trashing. It’ll make organizing your new apartment a breeze.

2. Plan The Process

Winging it isn’t for everyone. It certainly shouldn’t be the mindset used when moving. Be sure to let the community know your date and schedule the elevator, if applicable. Plan out a loose schedule for how you want moving day to go. Whether you’re moving during the week or on the weekend, take into consideration holidays, traffic, the parking situation at your new place, and weather. Having a clear idea of when and how you’ll be getting from point A to B will relieve some stress.

3. Small Boxes Are Better Than Bigger

One might think the bigger the box, the better. That’s not the case. No one wants to spend time meticulously packing a giant box just to realize it’s too heavy to lift. The smaller the box, the lighter it will be, and the less strain you’ll place on yourself when moving.

4. Create A Labeling System

Help future you by clearly labeling which room each box is intended to be placed in within your new apartment. By labeling all four sides of the box, you’ll be sure to know which one each is regardless of how it’s placed in your car or rental vehicle.

5. Use What You Have Instead of Bubble Wrap

If you can’t squeeze in a trip to the store to purchase bubble wrap to protect your fragile belongings, try using things you already have. Using plush items such as towels and sweatshirts to wrap up mugs, plates, and more, gets the job done. The towels and clothes are coming with you anyway, might as well put them to good use!

6. Think Ahead, Pack A Bag

There is nothing more frustrating than not having things you need quickly at hand the first night in your new place. After a long day of moving, you likely won’t have unpacked much yet. Not to mention you’ll be tired! Packing an overnight bag with some clothes, toiletries, and paper plates/utensils will help make the first night go smoothly so you aren’t searching through boxes.

7. Unpack With Purpose

Once you have time to unpack, do it strategically. Start with boxes that contain belongings kept in high-use areas such as the kitchen. Unpacking can be the most stressful part of a move, but if you power through each room, one at a time, you’ll be done in no time. Don’t forget to recycle your boxes and get rid of anything that may have escaped your eye during the declutter phase.

Bonus Tip

Moving with furniture adds a whole new level of complication that many people are uninterested in dealing with. If your current apartment is furnished with pieces that are in good shape consider selling or donating. Ikea recently announced they will be piloting a furniture rental program, so very soon you may be able to rent a couch!
