New Years Resolutions
A new year means making resolutions and like over 75% of the population, your resolution for 2017 probably has something to do with self-improvement, nutrition, fitness, or overall health. However, if you are like nearly 50% of the population, you will probably have little to no success in achieving your goals by the time this year comes to a close. Luckily, Montgomery White Oak Apartments is here to help!
All of our communities are located in the heart of Silver Spring, MD, which comes with the convenience of a number of fitness centers and restaurants with healthy eating options nearby, plus our spacious apartments offer the opportunity for a number of fun and challenging in-home workouts! In addition, although it seems like summer is too far away to even start thinking about, once the weather does turn warm all four of our communities have refreshing swimming pools and three of the four (Yorkshire Apartment Homes being the lone exception) have outdoor tennis courts!
Silver Spring has a number of convenient and affordable gyms and fitness centers that meet a variety of interests and needs.
For those people interested in CrossFit, both CrossFit Silver Spring and CrossFit Inner Loop offer both individual and group workouts, as well as diet and nutrition guidance, for both beginners and experts.
If a gym that specializes in dance classes, such as samba and Zumba, and various forms of martial arts, such as jui jitsu, taekwondo, capoeira, and MMA, is more your thing, look no further than Roda Movements in nearby Takoma Park, MD.
Sergeant’s Fitness Concepts offers boot camp classes and has locations in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. In Silver Spring they meet outside at St. Bernadette’s Church for most of the year and at Luther Rice Baptist Church in the winter.
Finally, if you are simply looking for a local gym that offers both individual and group exercise at an affordable price, check out Spunk Fitness and Rock Creek Sports Club, both of which have great reviews and are raved about by the people who work out there. In addition, White Oak Community Recreation Center is in close proximity to our communities and offers sports, fitness, dance, music, and art programs with outdoor facilities that include a multipurpose field, a basketball court, two playgrounds, and a skating area with ramps.
There are over 150 restaurants in Silver Spring offering an incredible cross-section of cuisine no matter what you love to eat (or if you have any dietary restrictions). For those people looking to eat a little healthier in 2017 while still eating out and eating the foods you love, there are more than a few restaurants from which to choose.
Sweetgreen has locations up and down the East Coast and their location in Silver Spring offers the same healthy, organic, locally-sourced, and strictly vegetarian menu that its customers have come to know and love.
Cava Grill offers traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine in a casual, modern setting. Although the lines are something long during the lunch and dinner rush, that only speaks to how popular the restaurant is with local residents.
Part café, part wine cellar, Adega Wine Cellars & Café offers a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and pasta dishes in a casual setting that has become a bustling neighborhood gathering place. Order your food and drinks at the counter and, while you wait, browse the wine shop where, if you find a bottle you like, they will uncork it for you at no charge.
One doesn’t usually think “healthy” when they hear the words “seafood” and “bar,” but All Set Restaurant & Bar manages to offer a number of healthy items on their menu, as well as more indulgent fare if you are there on your cheat day. They cook American cuisine that has been influenced by the traditions of coastal New England and use only fresh, natural ingredients in all their menu items.
If you prefer to cook and eat at home, all of our communities offer gourmet, eat-in kitchens and with a number of grocery stores in town – ranging from national chains like Giant Food and Safeway, to specialty food markets like Trader Joe’s, to local, independent stores like Snider’s Super Foods or Hung Phat Grocery – there are plenty of options to choose from!
So you joined a gym and started eating healthier, but sometimes you wrap up a grueling day at work and just want to go home and relax. But once you get there, you realize that you still want to get a good workout in but don’t feel like making the effort to go to the gym. Don’t worry – the spacious apartments at all four of our communities offer plenty of space to work out at home!
Men: Men’s Fitness has come up with eight at-home workouts to help you lose weight and build muscle. Ranging from upper and lower body workouts, ab workouts, cardio routines, and grueling full-body burnouts, check them out here and then let us know what you think!
Women: Women’s Health magazine has come up with 15 in-home workouts that require no equipment for those days when you just have no desire to leave the apartment.
