With this summer’s beautiful weather, we’ve had a great time enjoying all of the fun outdoor activities that Silver Spring has to offer. Now is the perfect time to head outside and take advantage of warm temperatures and longer days before fall approaches. Read on for some ideas of our favorite outdoor ways to enjoy Silver Spring!
Go for a swim.
There’s nothing more refreshing than taking a dip in a cool pool on a hot day. There are several public pools nearby that you can visit, and if you’re a White Oak Apartment resident, you can take advantage of the beautiful pools on property.
Visit a park.
Spend an afternoon at one of Silver Spring’s outdoor parks, like neighboring Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park. Plan a picnic and use one of the many available picnic areas or just relax and soak up the sun. With a lake for fishing, playground equipment, and a variety of sports fields/courts, this park offers many activities to enjoy.
Check out a local trail.
The Paint Branch Stream Valley Park Trail is a great option. This hard surface trail conveniently begins at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreational Park and extends for three miles to Fairland Road. It offers natural shade and beautiful views of the Paint Branch Stream and passes historic sites like the Valley Mill, making it a great trail for both hiking and biking.
Pick your own fruit.
Nearby farms like Blueberry Gardens and Butler’s Orchard allow you to pick your own produce, including blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, apples, and fresh cut flowers. It’s a great way to enjoy some sunshine while picking up delicious, fresh food.
Visit a farmers’ market.
Farmer’s markets are a fun way to support local farms and artisans. Our local Silver Spring markets offer an excellent variety of fresh produce, meets, cheese, baked goods, and snacks, along with handmade items.
Dine al fresco.
Many of our fantastic Silver Spring restaurants offer outdoor seating. Whether you’re looking for a quick, casual meal or a fine dining experience, you can choose from a variety of restaurants and types of cuisine. As the weather begins to cool, it’s the ideal time to unwind outside with a delicious meal.
Attend an outdoor concert.
There are many unique options for outdoor music in the Silver Spring area. Visit the Fountain Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring to hear live music on Friday and Saturday nights, or enjoy an outdoor festival like the upcoming Silver Spring Jazz Festival or the Takoma Park Folk Festival.
