Balcony Gardening for Apartment Living

Living in a rental apartment doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the joys of growing your own vegetables this summer. Several floorplans at The White Oak Apartment communities offer balconies or patios – perfect for container gardening.

Plants that grow exceptionally well include tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and radishes. Any type of pot will do depending on your decorating style. Clay, ceramic, or plastic all work, but be sure that it has proper drainage at the bottom. There should be drain holes on the side of the containers about one half of an inch from the bottom.

Synthetic soils can help your garden grow. Materials such as wood chips, peat moss, and sawdust are best suited for container plants. Add some gravel to the bottom of the pot before adding the soil to ensure proper drainage as you want to be sure not to run water on to the patio or balcony below, per lease agreements.

Consistent watering is key for a bountiful harvest. Plants should be watered every day, either from you or rain. Pick vegetables when they’re the ripest. They will be even more delicious because you grew them yourself!

Our White Oak Apartments in Silver Spring offer several apartments with patios and balconies perfect for creating your own vegetable container gardens and relaxing while watching them grow. Keep in mind that digging in common lawn areas at the communities needs prior written landlord approval. The Vista at White Oak, Yorkshire Apartments, Montgomery White Oak, and Montgomery Paint Branch are ready for you and your green thumb!

Celebrate Earth Day This Weekend (and All Year-Round)

Earth Day

Earth DayEarth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 each year since 1970. The concept was first proposed by United States Senator Gaylor Nelson, who after witnessing the massive oil spill in California the year before, wanted to combine the energy and enthusiasm of the student anti-war movement with an emerging public consciousness regarding air and water pollution. That first event, held in cities across the United States, saw 20 million Americans take to the streets, with 200 million people in 141 countries around the world celebrating it just 20 years later. This year, over 190 countries are expected to participate and there are several ways in which you can join in right here in Silver Spring, MD and the surrounding communities.
