Even though the weather has turned colder and the holidays are over, there are still plenty of fun ways to enjoy winter in Silver Spring. Check out this list of our favorite indoor and outdoor activities to learn how the White Oak Apartments team makes the most of winter here.
Ice skate at Veterans’ Plaza.
The new outdoor skating rink at Veterans’ Plaza is a great place to spend a day or evening. With a convenient location in downtown Silver Spring surrounded by great shops and restaurants, the skating rink is the perfect place to have fun with friends and family. The rink offers low admission prices and skate rentals, along with free parking after 8:00 on weeknights and all day on weekends. For the less experienced skaters, there are group lessons available, including ice hockey, youth, adult, parent-tot, and home school groups.
Listen to live music.
At local venue The Fillmore, there are many exciting live concerts this winter. Shows at The Fillmore cover a variety of different genres including rock, pop, country, and hip-hop. Some exciting upcoming shows include acts like Lucy Hale, 50 Cent, Bush, and Meghan Trainor. You can also enjoy live music at a variety of other local venues including Austin Grill, McGinty’s Public House, Quarry House Tavern, and The Society Restaurant and Lounge.
Stay warm and watch a movie.
With the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center located right in downtown Silver Spring, we have access to great movies every day, along with exciting special film events. In January, special film events include Elvis: That’s the Way it Is, Force Majeure, and King: A Filmed Record… Montgomery to Memphis. You can also enjoy current releases at the local Regal Majestic theater. You’ll be able to choose from a wider selection of new releases and IMAX 3-D showings. Don’t forget to check out the movie/meal deals for discounts on food and tickets before or after your movie.
Cozy up with a good book.
Head to the Silver Spring Library to check out some new books to read. You can also join the monthly book discussion group on the first Monday of each month to discuss new and classic books. Try a new cuisine.
Winter is a great time to try some delicious food at a new restaurant. Silver Spring has many terrific restaurants featuring a huge variety of cuisines, whether you’re looking for classic American, Asian, Caribbean, or Middle-Eastern dishes. For African cuisine, try Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant or Lucy Ethiopian Restaurant. For Indian food, try Kabob and Karahi or Mandalay Restaurant & Café. For authentic Italian food, try Sergio Ristorante Italiano or Pacci’s Trattoria.
Enjoy a live theatre production.
There are a variety of theatre venues in Silver Spring where you can take in both professional and community shows. The Highwood Theatre features professional and student shows, along with unique productions entirely created by home school students. At the Silver Spring Stage, you’ll find the best that community theatre has to offer: an intimate venue, affordable prices, and great productions. You can also enjoy professional productions at the Round House Theatre in nearby Bethesda. The Round House Theatre Education Center located in Silver Spring offers many educational activities and workshops for adults, teens, and youth interested in learning more about theatre.
